Nikon SF 200 Bulk Feeder Modification

The SF 200 bulk slide feeder  works extremely well for me & really makes the ED 4000 scanner wonderful to use IMO.  However due to my scanning a real a variety of slide mounts & the scanner seemingly calibrated or designed for thicker mounts than what I use, I did narrow the space that slides are pulled through that divides the feeding area, from the delivery area.   I did this by using a smooth plastic phone card, which is the same size as a credit card & installing it so as to narrow the feeding space.  Using a credit card with raised numbers may cause friction & hinder the movement of slide mounts.  If you only have a credit card, then put the double sided tape on the numbers side & keep the smooth signature side toward the slide mounts.

Previous to this modification, friction between slide mounts as some plastic & some cardboard mounts or loose labels on mounts, could cause two slides to stick & then be pulled together along the feeding track & thus jamming the scanner. You may have to experiment with the modification, to ensure that your widest slide mount can be pulled through the new but more narrow space.  Nikon's spacing would seem to fit a wider slide mount than what my labs use & I have not found any target specs for their preferred mounts in their manual.  Also make sure that you cut a space on the bottom right side of the card to make room for the pin that sticks out of the feeding divider, otherwise, the feeding divider now covered by the plastic card, will no longer be flat.

For bulk scanning I use NikonScan software alone because it saves each scan to the hard drive before starting the next scan If bulk scanning were to be done through Photoshop instead & Photoshop closes or your computer freezes or crashes for some reason, then you'd lose all the scans up to that point, as they'd still be held  open in Photoshop.  If I'm doing only a few scans or less & I will be working on them right away, then I'll do them within Photoshop while I'm at the computer.  But most of my high res bulk scanning is done while I'm away from the computer doing other things such as sleeping, having dinner, doing errands, so I use NikonScan software for my bulk scanning..

I did not invent this fix & so do not take credit for it & I thank whomever did invent it.

Use double sided tape on the back of a plastic card such as a phone card, to the Feed IN side of the
plastic center divider. Align it to narrow the slot that a slide can feed through to one slide width.
